About The Artist

The Set List

There was a long time where I would just clip my own wings for fear of being attacked for who I was born to be.

This is a really great era for us to be alive, us particularly alpha-empowered women!” That’s Alanis Morissette speaking to Walmart Soundcheck about her first record in four years: ‘Havoc and Bright Lights.’ ‘Havoc’ finds the ‘You Oughta Know’ singer reflecting on some big life changes: marriage, motherhood… and rock ‘n’ roll. Check out our exclusive set with Alanis (filmed in the San Fernando Valley on a searing hot August day) - and go pick up a copy of ‘Havoc and Bright Lights’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide!

-The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On Havoc And Bright Lights:
“I wrote the record when my son turned five and a half months. We built a makeshift studio in our house so that I could breast-feed and be available for my son, and write at the same time.”

On Rock And Motherhood:
“I was at that 'Y' in the road where one side was career, the other side was choosing “momhood” fulltime. I decided that I didn’t want to have to pick.”

On Fighting Workaholism:
"It’s actually quite challenging for me to manage my time. Workaholism is the “respectable” addiction. If you work ‘til four in the morning, people pat you on the back. I think workaholism can really take over your life and render it unmanageable and keep you super disconnected from the people you love - in a really destructive way. I’m working on my workaholism!”

On Female Empowerment:
“There was a long time where I would just clip my own wings for fear of being attacked for who I was born to be. This is a really great era for us to be alive, us particularly alpha-empowered women!”

Woman Down
Alanis opens her set with ‘Woman Down,’ an electronica-tinged track that champions the empowerment of women. Explains the Canadian-born singer: “It’s a new era now, where [we women] are being celebrated as opposed to being attacked. It’s a really great era for us to be alive.”

You Learn
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 17 years since the singer’s milestone record, ‘Jagged Little Edge,’ an effort that has sold more than 33 million copies worldwide. In ‘You Learn,’ Alanis name checks the album title (“Swallow it down / What a jagged little pill”), and takes us back to 1995.

Havoc
The song that inspired the title track to her new album is a classic Alanis Morissette ballad. Co-written with producer Guy Sigsworth, ‘Havoc’ finds the singer deep in confessional mode: “I’m slipping again / I’m up to old tricks / I have no defense / I’m wreaking havoc.”

Guardian
Alanis explains the meaning behind the new record’s first single: “The chorus is about my son and this “protector-ship”, this mama bear that emerged. The verses are about me really growing this inner-mom to take care of myself better.”
