About The Artist

The Set List

I had to do a lot of self acceptance. If you’re honest, you can do no wrong. I had to be true to myself.

Canadian singer/songwriter Melanie Fiona opens up to Walmart Soundcheck about her deeply personal new record, ‘The MF Life.’ The Grammy-winner's sophomore effort features some big talent (Rico Love, Nas, John Legend, Drake, among others), and more illuminating tunes about the Melanie Fiona life. Check out our live set with Melanie at the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood - and go pick up a copy of ‘The MF Life’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide.

-The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On The MF Life:
The album is about the ups and downs of love. Accept and embrace the ups and the downs of the MF life!

On 4AM: The Movement:
I’ve definitely been in that situation where at 4 o’clock in the morning you don’t know where your partner is. I’ve had women share very personal stories with me about living their 4AM scenarios.

On Post Grammy Pressure:
I had a self doubt within myself. What if I’m not good enough the second time around? What if I can’t sing better than I did before? What if people don’t want to grow with me? I had to do a lot of soul searching. I had to do a lot of self acceptance… If you’re honest, you can do no wrong. I had to be true to myself. I had to experiment and believe that I could set and surpass my own bar.

On Keeping It Real:
I promise to always keep it real and keep it truthful. I do feel that the one thing we forget sometimes is that we so focus on the things that differentiate us rather than the things that keep us. We’re all so similar and on the inside we are built exactly the same. There’s beauty in that.

This Time
The first track on ‘The MF Life’ is a hard-driving collaboration with rapper J. Cole. Part break-up ballad and part rock anthem, ‘This Time’ finds the singer looking ahead past a difficult relationship. Sings Melanie: “If only you knew all the love I had inside / If only I told you that you were my greatest pride…”

Give It To Me Right
The debut single from Melanie’s 2009 album ‘The Bridge’ was co-written by Andrea Martin (who also wrote Leona Lewis’s smash hit single, ‘Better In Time’). 'Give It To Me Right' is a similar female empowerment anthem, a take-no-prisoners tune about never settling for second best. Sings Melanie: “I'm not trying to run your life / That’s why I’m nobody’s wife…”

Running
Explains Melanie: “I think that throughout my stories and sharing my experiences through my album, people will see that I’m flawed, I’ve been down, I’ve been through some things. I’ve been through some amazing moments as well. I just hope that [fans] feel encouraged to celebrate that in their own lives as well. I hope my music can do that.”

Wrong Side Of A Love Song
The most talked-about tune on ‘The MF Life’ is also the singer’s favorite song. Explains Melanie: “I think it’s my favorite song on the album. I feel like the song is my best example, my best representation of my growth vocally as a songwriter, as a storyteller. I think that it will become one of a lot of people’s favorite records.”

It Kills Me
This track (from Melanie’s 2009 debut, ‘The Bridge’) earned the singer her first Grammy nomination. Explains Melanie: “It makes me feel great that out of something so tragic, the pain and love and all the pain that I put into that song, turned into something really successful and beautiful for me. One of the highlights of my career for sure!”

4AM
“I’ve definitely been in that situation where at 4 o’clock in the morning you don’t know where your partner is. I think that everybody is doing something different at 4AM. When you love someone and you don’t know where they are, that’s the time when your mind starts to race. You’re only left with your thoughts.”
