On Songwriting:
“I’ve always been very involved with all my albums, writing on every single song of mine. I’ve never had anybody hand over a song. I wrote half of the record all by myself – without a co-writer. I produced two songs on this record. One of the songs I wrote when I was 15. It’s called ‘Darlin'.’ It’s a very special record.”
On Bittersweet Emotions:
“I would say the overall theme to this record is about finding inner strength and moving forward and just living and learning. I think the overall emotion is bittersweet. There’s a blend of happy and sadness.”
On Being A Tomboy:
“Growing up in Canada was cool. I grew up in a really small town and I was kind of a little tomboy! I started skateboarding in high school and wearing baggy clothes. I started singing in church when I was a little girl and went on to fairs and banquets. I loved singing and I started to learn the guitar and the piano and the drums on my own. My parents were very encouraging and supportive.”

Wish You Were Here
“I can be tough / I can be strong / But with you / It’s not like that at all…” So begins Avril in this new track from ‘Goodbye Lullaby.’ ‘Wish You Were Here’ is indicative of the record’s organic production. Sings Avril: “I don’t wanna let go / I just wanna let you know that I never wanna let go.”
What The Hell
The singer explains the first single from her fourth studio album: “It’s very much like my older stuff. The rest of this album is not really like that. It’s a fun upbeat anthem about not really taking things too seriously and having fun and letting loose!”
Push
Avril tells us that 'Goodbye Lullaby' is about pushing through the tough times and breaking through to a stronger, purer place. ‘Push’ finds the Canadian singer/songwriter at her most introspective. Sings Avril: “When push comes to shove / It’s gonna take the both of us.”
Smile
Explains Avril: “I wanted the vocal to be the main instrument; I didn’t want it to be buried in a ton of tracks. I really wanted the listener to hear the emotion. I kind of just started off with an acoustic guitar. I would sing to it and then build around the track.”
Girlfriend
With her hoodie up, Avril launches into ‘Girlfriend,’ the lead single from her third studio album, ‘The Best Damn Thing.’ Written by Avril and Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, ‘Girlfriend’ scored April a major worldwide hit. Today, it’s given an acoustic makeover and a beautiful arrangement that showcases Avril's powerful vocals.
I’m With You
Avril closes her Soundcheck set with one of her biggest hits, ‘I’m With You.’ It also marked the singer's first nomination into Grammy Land (the song was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Voal Performance at the 2004 Grammy Awards). Sings Avril: “Take me by the hand / Take me somewhere new / I don’t know who I am but I’m with you.”
