About The Artist

The Set List

“I can already tell you that ‘Hillbilly Bone’ has become the high point in my show… and it will only get bigger and better.” That’s Oklahoma boy Blake Shelton singing the praises of his latest hit single and “six pack” recording, ‘Hillbilly Bone.’ The country singer talks to Soundcheck about his anthemic collaboration with Trace Atkins, and delivers a foot-stomping set that includes five of his new record's six songs. Check out our interview and performance with Blake - and go pick up a copy of ‘Hillbilly Bone’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide.

On The Changing Music Industry:
“We decided to do a six song album -- we call it a “six pack” -- for several reasons. From a record label point of view, album sales are taking a nose dive these days because of the Internet. People are buying the one song they want and not the album. What was enticing about it for me is to be able to put out new music constantly. I’m always looking for what’s next and I’m willing to try new things… to keep my fans interested as much as I can.”

On Trace Atkins:
“I met Trace Atkins the first month or two that I started touring. I remember rooting for him and pulling for him. He’s just this big ole guy that’s really intimidating at first. I like to think of him as a guys' guy. He comes across so mean and rough... but as you get to know him he’s a really good guy. His bark is worse than his bite!"

On What Makes A Hillbilly:
“I done my research on what a Hillbilly really is... somebody that loves country music or does something that's probably not all that classy, but [it's just] the way they want to handle the situation. I think everyone of us has that in them.”

On Fame:
“I’m not the most talented guy in Nashville by a longshot. I was just one of the luckiest guys in Nashville.”

On The Road:
“The reason I got into the music industry is because I love to perform live. My favorite thing about being on the road is that hour and a half every night that I’m up there and I get to entertain. It never gets old to me.”

Did You Know?

• He’s an Oklahoma boy. Blake grew up in Oklahoma and moved to Nashville at age 17 to pursue a career in country music.

• He’s dating fellow country singer (and Soundcheck artist) Miranda Lambert. Lambert sings backup vocals on Blake's hit, ‘Home.’

• He’s buddies with Trace Atkins. Explains Blake: “He’s just this big ole guy that’s really intimidating at first. I like to think of him as a guy’s guy."

• He’s changing the way he releases music to match the new music industry. Says Blake: “I want to give my fans new music more often and at a lower price.”

• ‘Hillbilly Bone’ is in stores now. Pick up a copy of the record online and in Walmart stores nationwide.
Hillbilly Bone
“It’s just a reflection of who I am as a person and the things that I’m into. I’m not a guy that writes tons of songs, but when I do write one it’s normally because something really strong hit me at that moment, and I sat down and put it on paper and on tape. I’m really proud of how [this] record turned out.”

Almost Alright
It’s refreshing to hear a “guys’ guy” like Blake Shelton sing about the emotional sensitivities of a break-up. In true Shelton style, his take on a break-up is tempered with some tough guy stylings. Sings a recovering Blake: “I barely want to break his nose when I see you with another guy / I’m absolutely posi-lutely almost alright!"

You’ll Always Be Beautiful
‘You’ll Always Be Beautiful’ is a strong ballad that’s sure to appeal to the singer’s army of female fans. Sings Blake: “I don’t care if your hair’s a mess / The make-up you had on your face is now all over your pillowcase / But you’ll always be beautiful to me...”

She Wouldn’t Be Gone
It’s time for a blast from the past – and the first hit single from Blake’s fifth studio album, ‘Startin’ Fires.’ Written by Jennifer Adan and Corey Batten, ‘She Wouldn’t Be Gone’ is a rip-roaring country anthem about looking back on what turned a relationship sour. Sings Blake: “If I’d have loved her this much all along... / Maybe she wouldn’t be gone.”

Can’t Afford To Love You
Blake's new album ‘Hillbilly Bone’ is packed with six songs - and each has the potential to be a hit single. ‘Can’t Afford To Love You’ is our lead contender, a tune about a working guy's love woes. Sings Blake: “In my 40 dollar jeans / Next to the Beauty Queen / I can’t afford to love you... but I can’t afford not to!”

Delilah
Blake closes his set with ‘Delilah,’ a powerful new song from ‘Hillbilly Bone.’ In the great tradition of one-name tunes (‘Jolene,’ ‘Fancy’), Blake tells a story about a girl looking for love in all the wrong places. Sings Blake: “You can’t blame no-one but you Delilah / For what you find when you never ever look around.”
