The Sound of Puerto Rico
Soundcheck Latino recently traveled to Burbank, California for an exclusive in-studio performance from Latin American sensations, Calle 13. The Puerto Rican duo's music has been dubbed equal parts Hip-Hop and Reggaeton, but it's really a whole lot more.
Made up of two half-brothers, Residente and Visitante, the pair sings (and raps) powerful tunes that capture the spirit and history of their land and people. Infusing salsa, jazz, electronica and rock 'n' roll into their fierce beats, Calle 13 have a sound that's definitely their own. And after listening to a few preview tracks from their much-anticipated sophomore release, Residente/Visitante, we're convinced these guys are headed for international success.

¡Atrévete Te, Te!
"Come out of the closet! Take off your nail polish! Stop covering yourself... nobody is going to photograph you!" So sings Residente in this emotional and political rap about stripping away the layers that hide us. Already an anthem in the band's native Puerto Rico, ¡Atrévete Te, Te! also picked up the Best Short Form Music Video award at last year's Latin Grammy Awards.
La Jirafa
From the band's eponymous first album, La Jirafa (The Giraffe) is a melodic tale of a love rich in romantic imagery. Much of Calle 13's lyrical poetry is lost in translation, but some of it - like this whimsical track - survives the translation to English. With his trademark eccentric analogies, Residente sings of a colorful obsession: "When I saw you... it made me tickle. It was like having 40 ants scratching my belly."
Cumbia de los aburridos
Closing out their sensational set, Residente launches into this hypnotic and feverish call to get crazy. Translated literally as Cumbia of the Boring Ones, the track teases those standing on the sidelines to get off their feet and have a good time. "Let's revive the dead!" Residente pleads: "The ones that don't dance, that stay in the corner without getting up." If you're still not moving, then you haven't yet succumbed to the charms of this energetic band. Just wait.
