About The Artist

The Set List

Corinne Bailey Rae’s new album ‘The Sea’ is an inspired collection of songs dealing with loss, grief, hope, and ultimately... love. The young singer/songwriter from Leeds, England suffered a significant personal loss while recording, and ‘The Sea’ is a chronicle of her triumphant return to land. Check out Soundcheck’s exclusive interview with Corinne - and go pick up a copy of ‘The Sea’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide.

- The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On The Sea:
“I called the album ‘The Sea’ because it seemed like when I was writing the songs that the sea kept appearing. There’s water in a lot of the songs. There’s a song on the album, which is entitled ‘The Sea,’ that I recorded by the sea near my house. It just became really obvious as it was developing that it was going to be called ‘The Sea.’”

On The First Single:
“I feel like it’s a really good reflection of the whole album. It starts off with just me playing my guitar. It’s intimate and really personal and I feel like it kind of blossoms out into something else. By the time it gets to the chorus it's really a big production [with] strings and organ. I felt like it was a really good taste of the record."

On Making An Organic Record:
“[The songs] really work live because we recorded them live. We didn't do a modern recording; we recorded it live. We put down the drums, bass, and guitar at the same time. There’s loads of movement. It’s not in time all the way through. It's tidal in the way that some of the choruses are faster and some of the verses are pulled back.”

On Band Beginnings:
“I’ve been playing music since I was really young. I really enjoyed playing in front of people. I found that I was really able to emote in the playing. When I was about 15 I started a band called ‘Helen’ that was like this indie guitar band around the grunge era – when everyone was in a band! I felt like I had an unconventional voice... and I didn't feel like it really fit into anything. Getting to play in an indie band was great because it was all about being an outsider and not fitting in and being unconventional.”

On Other People’s Records:
“I felt that when I was making this album that I didn’t really want to spend loads of time listening to other people’s records. What I really wanted was silence... but there were definitely other musicians that inspired me. I read Leonard Cohen’s ‘The Book Of Longing,’ which is all his poetry and lyrics… that was really inspiring. I really got into Frida Kahlo’s paintings. The way she expressed pain I thought was really beautiful. I tried not to listen to loads of music, but I definitely read other people’s stuff and looked at other people’s stuff.”

On Why You Should Get The Sea:
“I hope people like it. I hope they have the chance to get it. It is an album... it’s not really a collection of radio-friendly songs and loads of other songs that didn’t make it. It’s not that kind of a record - it’s a journey. It means a lot to me. It makes sense when you listen to it all the way through. I just want people to hear it!”
