About The Artist

The Set List

I got to the point where the world around me just got a little loud. I had so much going on in my head that sleep became my only reprieve.

David Cook takes over a downtown Los Angeles warehouse to perform new tunes from his highly-anticipated sophomore disc, ‘This Loud Morning.’ David tells Walmart Soundcheck about the inspiration behind 'This Loud Morning,' and the big plans he has in store for the tour... For more of that interview (and to hear five of the new record's songs live), check out our set with David – and go pick up a copy of ‘This Loud Morning’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide.

-The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On His New Record’s Title:
“I got to the point where the world around me just got a little loud. I had so much going on in my head that sleep became my only reprieve. It represents that loud reality we all have sometimes.”

On Pressure:
“There was a lot of pressure on me for this record, but I think it was all self-imposed. I was so proud of what we accomplished with the first record and I really set out to outdo that record. I’ve always been that way. With every successive record the bar’s a little bit higher."

On Writing:
“I got to write with some amazing people: Kevin Griffin from Better Than Ezra, Raine Maida from Our Lady Peace, Zac Maloy from The Nixons, Johnny Rzeznik from Goo Goo Dolls. If they gave trophies for awesome writing experiences, my mantle would be full right now!”

On Advice:
“I heard “no” more times than I would ever care to mention before I ever heard yes. When I finally heard “yes" - when it came out of Simon and Paula and Randy’s mouths - that was a trip. There was this whole journey before them that took me to that “yes.” “No” can be a whole lot more helpful than “yes,” if you’re willing to take it that way.”

On Twitter:
“I use Twitter quite a bit. It’s usually just for innocuous jokes that only me and my friends find funny! Obviously losing my brother to a brain tumor back in ’09, I’ve become heavily involved in brain tumor and brain tumor funding. I’ve been involved with an organization called ABC Squared, and they are committed to raising awareness and funding to get rid of brain tumors and brain cancer.”

On The Tour:
“I’ve got really lofty goals for this tour and supporting this record. The scope of this record is big, so I want the show to be that way. My goal is to pull out all the stops! I hope everybody comes and checks it out.”

Did You Know?

• He was an artist in his own right before Idol. The Texan-born, Missouri-raised singer began playing guitar at the tender age of 12, and formed his own band at age 15.

• Idol made him a international superstar. David won the seventh season of the hit television show and released his major label debut (‘David Cook’) in 2008.

• He’s got big shoes to fill. David’s major label debut album spawned two Top 20 singles and hit platinum status, selling more than a million copies.

• His highly-anticipated new record is called ‘This Loud Morning.’ The disc was produced by Matt Serletic, who has helmed records for the Aerosmith, Rob Thomas, and Willie Nelson, among others.

Circadian
David opens his Walmart Soundcheck set with the lead song from his sophomore album, ‘This Loud Morning.’ ‘Circadian’ doesn’t disappoint; it’s classic, anthemic rock, but offers up a world-weary, wiser lyric. Sings David: “Who’s to say that I’m never wrong? / Who’s to say that I’m not already gone?”

Take Me As I Am
For his sophomore disc David teamed up with Matt Serletic, a veteran producer who has worked with Aerosmith, Rob Thomas, and Willie Nelson, among others. ‘Take Me As I Am’ is an album highlight, an introspective rocker about giving a railed relationship one more try.

Paper Heart
Early on in the recording process David described ‘This Loud Morning’ as having moments of “massive choruses” with a “very U2-esque” feel. Co-written with English songwriters Jim Irvin and Julian Emery, ‘Paper Heart’ delivers a stadium arena anthem - with heart. Asks David: “What use is a paper heart / When you’re stuck in the rain?”

Time Marches On
David opens with a powerful acoustic vocal from his sophomore album, ‘This Loud Morning.’ Time and change are two strong themes to the new record, and 'Time Marches On' shows the singer confronting both. Sings the 28 year-old artist: “Time marches on / Right or wrong / Never waits for no one new.”

The Last Goodbye
Explains David: “I’ve always enjoyed songs where the vibe of the lyrics don’t necessarily match the vibe of the music, but somehow it’s this cohesive music. The song itself is talking about saying goodbye to a lingering relationship, something that just lasted too long.”
