Soundcheck celebrates the holidays with a country phenomenon: superstar Faith Hill. We met Mrs. McGraw and her choir inside a Tennessee studio where we were treated to an intimate performance of tracks from her brand new CD, ‘Joy To The World.’ Faith’s favorite time of the year is the holiday season – and this performance showed us why. ‘Joy to the World’ salutes the season in a spectacular way; go pick up a copy of the disc online and in Walmart stores nationwide.
Happy Holidays!

On Holiday Inspiration:
"The Christmas season is my favorite time of the year. It always has been - even as a child. The name of my very first Christmas album is called ‘Joy to the World,’ and I was inspired by songs that I first sang as a very young child in the church. That’s where I began the song process because there are so many Christmas songs to choose from. I just had to narrow it down to a tight little package!”
On Taking Tips From Tim:
“I asked my husband’s opinion about the songs that were going on the album because there are just so many! I had ones that were my favorite as a child – but ‘Away In A Manger’ was not on there. That’s his favorite Christmas song, so he kindly asked if I would include that song for him and I did. I love the arrangement; it’s reminiscent of the Appalachian mountain music.”
On How A Baby Changes Everything:
“It’s a song that I first heard almost four years ago as I was listening and recording songs for my last album. While in the studio I realized that it was such a special song and I didn’t want it to get lost on the album. It’s a ballad, it’s a powerful message and I knew that it would be maybe second or third down on the album. I called the songwriter and asked him if there was any way I could keep it for my Christmas album… and he agreed. He was so gracious. I’m so very grateful to have that song. It’s a very powerful story.”
On Singing Vs. Acting:
“The process as a singer is very live and immediate. You get an immediate reaction. Making a film, you know, it’s a lot more time consuming, but in terms of preparing for a role, it’s not that different. It’s really about being focused on what it is that I’m creating.”

Little Drummer Boy
As sunlight illuminates the stained-glass windows, Faith leads off her Soundcheck set with a traditional carol. Today’s rendition of ‘The Little Drummer Boy,’ however, is anything but traditional. Faith’s flawless reworking of the holiday classic is quietly powerful. Utilizing a modernized melody, she is accompanied by a gospel choir and a soaring crescendo that spotlights her impressive range.
A Baby Changes Everything
The first single from ‘Joy To The World’ is the album’s only original tune (penned by songwriters Craig Wiseman and Tim Nichols) and is one of the disc’s most powerful moments. As the song climaxes with a rousing gospel choir, Faith delivers a soulful set of “Hallelujahs”. Ultimately, what’s most touching about this tale of Mary is that it could be a story set today: “She can feel it’s coming soon… There’s no place, there’s no room. A baby changes everything.”
Joy To The World
Time for the title track to Faith’s new record – and one the artist holds close to her heart. Explains the singer: “It’s one of my favorite songs on the album. It just starts off with this joyous horn arrangement…” Again, Faith transports the listener on a journey that takes this timeless classic to a new place. Subtle but strongly moving, ‘Joy To The World’ is a set highlight.
Winter Wonderland
Faith closes her powerful Holiday set with a Christmas classic written in 1934 by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith. Covering a tune that’s been mastered by such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Dolly Parton, Johnny Mathis and Cyndi Lauper, she brings her own impeccable vocal style. Perhaps no other song conjures up the sentiment and symbolism of the holiday season. Sings Faith: “Later on we’ll conspire… as we dream by the fire… to face unafraid the plans we have made… Walking in a winter wonderland.”
