About The Artist
The Set List
The Piano Man
Making his way into Hollywood's Henson Recording Studios, Five For Fighting frontman John Ondrasik calmly stepped to the baby grand piano and settled in for a few warm-up chords in preparation for his upcoming Soundcheck performance.
The Buzz Builds
As the band's gear was being set up - made up of an electric bass, acoustic guitar and a killer percussion setup - buzz started to fill the room. Five For Fighting was a mere moments away from hitting the stage.
Off their new record Two Lights, Five For Fighting began the set with their hit single, "The Riddle," a song that tells the story of a boy and his dad, and the lessons of life learned along the way. It was a special treat for those of us lucky enough to be in attendance.
We were also lucky to hear a few hit songs from the past including "Superman" and "100 Years," two songs that have helped define the great sound and songwriting that Five For Fighting has become known for.
The Real Deal
We had the chance to sit down and talk with John about his new album, his songwriting and musicianship skills - even his own kids.
Right away we could tell John was very humble and down to earth. To this day, he said he always reminds himself that despite the fame and success, how incredibly blessed he is that he's able to do what he loves.
We're quickly realizing that Five For Fighting are indeed the real deal.
John proclaims that Two Lights is his most personal album to date.
He wrote "The Riddle" for his children. "It's a love song from a father to his son," he said. And in "Two Lights," he also touches on the father-son motif, telling the story of a soldier's father dealing with his son being sent to Iraq. "I write about our place in the world, and my place in life."
A Closer Connection
The Five For Fighting session was one of the most enjoyable Soundcheck tapings we've had the pleasure to work on. John and the band are an incredible group that has the rare combination of the right attitude coupled with incredible talent. That combination made our job easy and a joy to be a part of.
Enjoy the show; it's a special one.
