About The Artist

The Set List

Soundcheck goes back to school for a performance with band mates (and former classmates) Gym Class Heroes. Performing in front of some very lucky fans from the outdoor stage of California college Loyola Marymount, the boys tease our audience with tunes from their brand new album, ‘The Quilt.’ The new record travels to new musical territory for the boys - and features some exciting collaborations with Cool & Dre and … Darryl Hall. Check out our exciting session with Gym Class Heroes – and grab a copy of their new disc, ‘The Quilt’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide.

-The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On Making The Quilt:
Travis: “It’s a masterpiece to say the least. We called it ‘The Quilt’ because we feel like each song has its own personality and identity and it’s still a cohesive Gym Class Heroes record. It’s definitely a big step; I think we just pushed the envelope as far as our sound goes. With every record we kind of try new things – just like any artist – working with new producers and whatnot. On this record we worked with a lot of artists that we look up to. We worked with The Dream, Busta Rhymes, Darryl Hall, which was like a dream come true for me – seeing as I had his face tattooed on my hand. It was a little creepy!”

On Stage Vs. Studio:
Travis: “I love being in the studio and I love recording, but I also love being on stage and performing. I think what we do in the studio just gets amplified and exaggerated on stage; it’s more of an energy thing with the live show. We just finished The Warped Tour – 70 days of non-stop rocking!” Adds Matt: “We even had shows on our day off!” Adds Disashi: “It was awesome because this was our first year of completely headlining the tour and it was amazing being able to close the entire thing.”

On Fickle Fans:
Matt: “We definitely win a lot of people over when they come out to our shows for the first time and they say: ‘Oh man, I’ve heard about you guys but this is the first time seeing you and I love you!’” Travis: “Or they say ‘I hated you before seeing you live!’ I don’t know how to take that!” Matt: “That’s actually a really good compliment, I think!” Travis: “Yeah, but it’s awkward!”

Did You Know?

• Gym Class Heroes are: Travis McCoy (lead vocals), Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo (lead guitar), Eric Roberts (bass guitar) and Matt McGinley (drums, percussion).

• They’re New Yorkers. The band hails from Geneva, New York.

• They actually did meet in high school. Travis McCoy met Matt McGinley while at high school in Geneva – and the rest, as they say, is history.

• Fall Out Boy like ‘em. Gym Class Heroes have collaborated with their good friend, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump on numerous occasions.

• They like it live. Their music is noted for its lack of production and reliance on more organic sounds and live instrumentation.

• They’ve already got four albums under their belts. Gym Class Heroes released their highly-anticipated fourth album, ‘The Quilt’ on September 9, 2008.
Blinded By The Sun
Complete with a sample from Corey Hart’s ‘80s masterpiece, ‘I Wear My Sunglasses At Night,’ Gym Class Heroes kicks off their energetic set with a sneak peek from their brand new album, ‘The Quilt.’ Produced by Patrick Stump, ‘Blinded By The Sun’ is a song about infidelity – as well as a name check of their hometown, New York: “Where were you the other day? Your car was parked on 38th. But you were at your mother’s place. Your mother lives on Broadway!”

Live A Little
“When I count to three, I wanna see you guys jumping up and down! Can you do that?!” So begs Travis in this brand new GCH anthem about illusion and twisted reality. ‘Live A Little’ also features a stunning guitar solo from Disashi – and some of the best lyrics Gym Class Heroes has ever written. Sings Travis: “You whisper that I’ve lost the race but I won’t stop. I’ll hold you by my side. I need you here tonight because if we’re going to lose this thing, we’re going out in style…”

Cookie Jar
Time for another brand spanking new track from ‘The Quilt.’ ‘Cookie Jar’ is slated as the second single from the album and judging by today’s performance – it looks set to be one of Gym Class Heroes’ biggest hits. The album version even features The-Dream (AKA Terius Youngdell Nash) collaborating on the infectious chorus with Travis. Today, the band takes his place in an honest, intelligent song about relationship temptation: “I wanna be faithful but I just can’t keep my hands out of the cookie jar…”

Cupid’s Chokehold
To conclude their set, Gym Class Heroes saves the best for last. ‘Cupid’s Chokehold’ is the band’s signature song and the fans’ sentimental favorite. Although Fall Out Boy Patrick Stump isn’t around to deliver his popular backing vocals, the band delivers sans Stump. Interestingly, ‘Cupid’s Chokehold’ uses the music, chorus and famous spoken ‘ba ba da da’ line from Supertramp’s hit song, ‘Breakfast in America.’ Sings Travis: “Take a look at my girlfriend. She’s the only one I’ve got. Not much of a girlfriend. I never seem to get enough…”
