About The Artist

The Set List

Soundcheck spends a day with Long Beach, California native Jenni Rivera aka "La Diva de la Banda." Jenni Rivera sings classic Banda - traditional Mexican music that's as passionate as it is popular. Rivera's voice is an impressive tool; not only does she hit the high notes, she's embraced within the Mexican community for her songs about women empowerment and strength. Don't miss our exclusive set and interview with Jenni as she opens up about her deep connection with the fans and her intensely personal new record, titled simply: 'Jenni.' So pick up a copy of her excellent new CD online and in Walmart stores nationwide.

-The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On the Arrival of 'Jenni':
"The name of my new album is 'Jenni.' It's just 'Jenni.' I've never had a self-titled album. I want to be known not as an artist, as a human being, as a woman. To transmit the feelings that a regular normal human being wants to transmit. I am who I am because of what my father and my mother fed me when I was a child - and that was music. Mexican music. Although I was born and raised in Los Angeles area, raised in Long Beach, I was always taught what my culture was, where our food was, what blood we have. Part of our culture is Mexican music and now I live from it."

On The Road:
"Being on the road is what I love the most. It's that interaction with the public - knowing that you're vocalizing in the back, warming up and you can hear everybody screaming and everybody's excited to see you. I'm just a girl from Long Beach, I don't know what the heck they're screaming about, but they want to see me and it feels really good. To know that they buy my music and they listen to what I say and what I sing is very important to me. Being on the road and being on stage with a live band - we don't do any type of playback or any type of fake music -this is real performing. Our Mexican public would not allow it any other way! That's the fun part - showing my public and showing the world that I can be on stage and do a three hour show with these high heels - and my diamond studded mike..."

On Strong Women:
"I've learned that women feel that I give them a sense of empowerment. I am just me. I just wanted to be a female and open my mouth and sing. I had something to say. As Madonna once said; she said the reason she started singing is because she had something to say. I do have something to say as well - the simple feelings and sentiments of a woman."

- She's a Cancer. Jenni Rivera was born July 2, 1969 to Pedro and Rosa Rivera.

- She's from Long Beach, California. Jenni's parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico but Jenni was born and raised in Long Beach, a beach community just outside of Los Angeles.

- She's from a famous singing family. Her brother is Mexican singer Lupillo Rivera.

- She is known for her contribution and revival of Banda (also known as 'Corrido') music, a brass-heavy type of traditional Mexican music

- She's known for her strong personality. In Mexico the singer has been nicknamed 'La Diva de la Banda' ('the Banda Diva') and 'La Primera Dama del Corrido' ('the First Lady of Corrido).

Que Me Vas A Dar? (What Are You Going To Give Me?)
Concluding her showstopper set with an audience favorite, 'Que Me Vas A Dar?' ('What Are You Going To Give Me'), Jenni delivers the highpoint of the show (with a vocal range that stuns the room). Sings the impassioned chanteuse: "Que me vas a dar si vuelvo... que meresca el sacrifico? Pourqu el dia qe nos dejamos lo entendi como el final..." ("What are you going to give me if I come back? You better deserve my sacrifice? Because that day I understood... it was over.")

De Contrabando (By Contraband)
As a piano tinkles in the background, Jenni begins dancing to this provocative song - from her 2005 album, 'Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida.' Begins Jenni in a vulnerable moment: "Sabes, disculpa el atrevimiento pero-es que me gustas mucho desde hace tiemp..." ("Forgive me for intruding but I have liked you for some time...")

Mirame (Look At Me)
It's rare to find weakness in both love and character in Jenni's music. 'Mirame' ('Look at me') is another example of the strength that Jenni brings to her songs. Sings Jenni: "Que sorpresas nos brinda el destino, tu te fuieste a encontrar otro nido, Hoy regresas buscando un abriog, que no te dare..." ("What a surprise destiny can bring. You went to look for another place and you come back today looking for warmth that I will not return.")

Ahora Que Estuviste Lejos (Now That You're Gone)
Fans connect to the heartbreak and power echoed in Jenni's vocals. Listen to this song (from 2007's popular disc, 'Mi Vidia Loca') - and you'll hear it right away. Jenni's vocals soar alongside a traditional Banda arrangement that captures the heartache of a woman missing her true love. Armed with an impressive line-up of backup singers, Jenni delivers an opening track overflowing with real emotion.

Culpable O Inocente (Guilty Or Innocent)
Jenni has listed this single as a personal favorite and it's easy to see why. 'Culpable O Inocente' is a signature Rivera track; it tackles the difficult theme of an all-encompassing love. The kick-off song from the new self-titled record 'Jenni' is testament to Jenni's tough-love lyricism. Sings the artist: "Que te prefiero a ti culpable o inocente..." ("I'd rather have you guilty or innocent.")

Inolvidable (Unforgettable)
As its title suggests, 'Inolvidable' is an unforgettable pop song, a throw-back to '60s melody with a Banda twist. Dancing around the floor, Jenni leaves us with a lyrical message that conflicts with the song's breezy sounds. Sings Jenni in this powerful female anthem: "Inolvidable asi me dicen mis ex amores afortunada y sin que te ofendas tengo... carinos que si son mejores..." ("My past lovers call me unforgettable. Don't be offended because I have found better lovers.")
