Senora from the Block
Soundcheck trekked to the East Coast for an exclusive performance by none other than international superstar, Jennifer Lopez. On the eve of her first Spanish language release, Como Ama Una Mujer (Like a Woman Loves), the singer / actress / entrepreneur delivered an intimate performance singing the Spanish sounds that are closest to her heart.
We'd heard the "diva" whispers, but the real Jennifer couldn't be further from that. Friendly, funny and warm, she embraced us with a down-to-earth persona that's utterly contagious. Accompanied by husband Marc Anthony, we witnessed an artist on top - traveling back to her roots. And, just like the title of her album suggests, this is clearly one woman in love. Have a listen to the music and you'll see what we mean.
J-Lo, the Triple Threat:
In an industry that traditionally celebrates one vision, Jennifer Lopez is an ambitious anomaly. She's a singer, actress and phenomenal dancer who wants to do it all. We asked the talented triple threat which specialty is her favorite. "Music was always part of my plan. When I was in the Bronx growing up... I always had a real love for acting and singing and dancing. I just saw it as one thing. I was really into musicals because my mother had exposed me to them. I always saw a career in entertainment as doing all three."
On the New Album:
Watch this performance and you'll see a different Jennifer Lopez. The beauty from the Bronx appears freer and less guarded than in previous performances. Blame it on the new record, which she relates, was a liberating project. "The studio process was very different than any other album I've ever made," Jennifer explains. "It took about three years because we didn't have any deadlines. Nobody asked me to make the album... It was a very natural thing. It was all... very inspired."
The Closing
After a lengthy absence from the music scene, the Puerto Rican powerhouse is back and better than ever. Como Ama Una Mujer is just the beginning of La Lopez's rocking renaissance. She has two highly anticipated movies due to be released this year: El Cantante and Bordertown (one of which is already generating Oscar buzz), and is also prepping for a new English album due in September. Jennifer promises the first single (which is scheduled to drop in June) will be an upbeat affair. She's even promising a tour later on in the year. And if today's performance is any indication of the show she has planned, we'll be lining up for tickets.
Enjoy the show.

Qué Hiciste
In this powerful anthem, a passionate Jennifer confronts a duplicitous lover. Qué Hiciste translates as a question: What did you do? Already a hit (and the first single from the new album), Qué Hiciste is a fierce and poetic song about freeing yourself from an unfaithful partner. Refusing to break, Jennifer promises, "I will erase your dreams with my dreams. The wind will blow away my memories of you forever."
Como Ama Una Mujer
Next, Jennifer launches into a beautiful ballad, the title track from her new album. Vocally, she's never sounded better. With sweeping chords and gentle harmonies, Como Ama Una Mujer (or, Like a Woman Loves) is a gorgeous affair; an affecting song about surrendering wholly to falling in love. "If I surrendered, it was completely", Jennifer sings. "And if I failed, I tried again... picking up the pieces along the way."
Tú
Staring directly into the camera, Jennifer sings a personal song to the man of her dreams. Tu (or, You) is an exuberant love song. "Sometimes I think that you appeared to show me that love exists," she sings, dancing across the stage as the song reaches its climactic crescendo. Tu completes the Lopez hour and it's the pinnacle of her performance. Gorgeous, heartfelt and affecting, it's a stunning finale.
Te Voy a Querer
Rumored to be the follow-up single to the smash hit, Qué Hiciste, Te Voy a Querer (or, I Will Love You) is a contagious tune about never giving up on love. Are we sensing a theme here? At the start of her relationship with Marc Anthony, Jennifer and Marc appeared cautious about publicly declaring their union. Not anymore. In this album, Jennifer's ready to yell from the rooftops just how much she is in love. "My doubts and fears have left me," she sings. "I have no secrets to hide... I want to wake next to you every morning."
Por Arriesgarnos featuring Marc Anthony
"Let's love slowly and without excuses," Jennifer sings in the sultry Por Arriesgarnos (or, Because We Took a Chance). With its slightly risqué lyrics and romantic solo, Por Arriesgarnos is a classic Jennifer Lopez ballad. A song about surrendering all inhibitions, she delivers a touching, poignant performance that'll stay with you long after it's finished.
Porque te Marchas
The heat on the soundstage simmers for a few minutes as Jennifer tackles a slower ballad, the gorgeous Porque te Marchas (or, Because You Are Leaving). Sitting down to deliver her heartfelt vocals, Jennifer croons of a relationship gone awry. Who in the Lopez catalogue is she talking about? We'll leave that to your imagination - though her words offer a clue. "Don't think that your vanity will conquer me,' sings La Lopez. "I bet everything for love and I'll do it again."
