THE ARRIVAL:
A Special Treat
Jewel. Of all the artists that have adopted single-name monikers, Jewel is in a class by herself. As she walked onto the Wal-Mart Soundcheck stage, we knew we were in for a special treat.
People, Gear and Energy
She had hand-picked the location: a rehearsal studio complete with a full stage and enough room to accommodate a band - which she came without.
"Wow, you really made it happen in here!" she remarked when she saw all the gear, met all the people and felt the energy.
Simple yet Elegant
The space ended up feeling very personal, exuding a warmth that allowed everyone to emotionally connect with the songs and stories she would bring to life that afternoon.
Just Jewel and Her Guitar
And so it was: just Jewel and her guitar, sitting down with our crew to tape a solo acoustic session that included songs both old and new. As the crew checked the gear, we looked forward to previews of songs from her highly anticipated new release "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland."
THE SET:
Again and Again
She opened with "Again and Again," and again and again she wowed us all with her lyrical insights and live vocal interpretations.
The Soundcheck production family seemed to fade into the scenery, everyone sitting on the floor, legs crossed and very intent on absorbing the magical energy that Jewel radiated. It all felt very - what's the word here? - natural.
A Good Day Indeed
As she moved into "Good Day," we knew that it was, indeed, a good day for everyone. If there was a highlight to the set, it had to be the touching ballad and title track from "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland." It was the perfect emotional crescendo before a seamless transition into her closing the set out with an acoustic version of her up-tempo, techno-flavored "Intuition" and its line, "I'm just a simple girl - living in a high-tech digital world."
THE INTERVIEW:
Of Alaska and Stardom
We all remained riveted to our seats as she told stories of her youth in Alaska, and about the trials and tribulations of music stardom. It's these challenges that have caused her lately to re-examine her music and return to her roots as inspiration for the new album.
She Made It Easy
We suspect it was the music that served as a warm-up, but Jewel really opened up during the interview. She is so well-spoken, so intelligent and just plain aware that she really made things easy for us.
THE POST-SCRIPT:
A Closer Connection
It was a day with Jewel and her guitar, her stories and some good-natured kidding around with the crew. Who could ask for more? It all just served to underscore what Wal-Mart Soundcheck is all about: giving you, the audience, a chance to connect closer with artists you love. We feel that happened today and we hope you agree.
Enjoy the show; it's a special one indeed.
