THE ARRIVAL:
The Master Sets the Stage
John Mayer invited the Wal-Mart Soundcheck team into his personal rehearsal space for this episode, and he surely didn't disappoint. From the moment he stepped into the building until the last note dropped, John commanded the show like a master conductor might a symphony.
In His Room ...
A first for the show, we were able to step in Mayer's actual rehearsal space to do a 360-degree shoot and create a true behind-the-scenes, intimate look at how he really creates when he's in not just any studio, but his studio. What you're about to see is a unique look into John Mayer's space: his process, his music, his way.
Dream Setup
John's rehearsal space looked like a playground of idea creation where musical dreams become reality. Music gear was stacked high and wide as far as the eye could see, and the overall setup set the stage for a memorable performance.
THE SET:
The Songs
Mayer's Soundcheck performance featured four tunes that spanned his career: Clarity from 2003's "Heavier Things"; Vultures from the John Mayer Trio album "Try!"; and Heart of Life as well as the new hit single Waiting on the World to Change from his new record "Continuum."
A Unique Range
The selections showcased John's versatility and range in being able to transition between light arrangements, heavy blues, rock and modern pop. All of this while still retaining a unique 'John Mayer' sound.
THE INTERVIEW:
Keeping the Torch
We could tell right away that John wasn't your typical music superstar. He's been able to find success, it seems, but not lose sight of what really drives him - chasing down the sound he loves and searching for great songs that have a chance to make history, not just be a flash in the pan.
The Legend
John didn't shy away from the challenge of living up to the expectations of his idols; legends like, "Buddy Guy, BB King and Eric Clapton," as he told us. To reach the goal of carrying on their tradition, he emphasized the importance of keeping music first in his life, and making it personal. "Everything on this record is my impulse," Mayer said. "And I think you can feel that when you put on this new music."
THE POST-SCRIPT:
What an Exclusive for Wal-Mart!
We were fortunate to get to work with John in a setting all his own - to see how he does it, and to catch a glimpse of the creative process that is John Mayer.
Enjoy the show; it was one to remember.
