The Set List
It’s not necessarily about me throwing the punch; it’s about me being able to take the punches of life and to keep moving forward.

On Balance:
“I guess the toughest thing for me is just balancing your professional life with your personal life. I think that’s the hardest challenge for me - just to make sure I set aside time for me and to set aside time for my family. And just doing things that are non work-related.”
On Maturity:
“It feels like I was able to put this record together pretty quickly. I don’t know if it’s that I’m getting older and time’s flying by more quickly; I just felt like it came together in a great way. It shows a more mature side of me as an artist and as a person. All the experience that I’ve gained – I think you can really hear it in this record.”
On Writing For Vern Gosdin:
“Mark Narmorel and I have been writing together for about 10 years. One of our mutual favorites is Vern Gosdin. If we start out writing a song as if we were writing it for Vern Gosdin, then something magical happens. It’s one of those weird things that songwriters do.”
On The Josh Turner Scholarship Fund:
“It basically started from me thinking about how I just didn’t have a lot of musical opportunities from my high school and in my upbringing. I came from a really rural school. I want to be able to help high school seniors in schools like that to chase their dream of being in music or art. I was young and naive and didn’t know how the business worked; I thought I’d be able to play around locally and somebody would come and discover me. That’s really just not how it works. Most of the time if you want to be an artist you have to go to where the music is. That was some of the best advice I got.”
On Advice To Young Musicians:
“This business is rough and it’s hard on you sometimes. Learn who you are. Find out what your sound is and fight for your music everyday. Don’t make any apologies.”

Punching Bag
Like much of Josh's music, the title track to his fifth studio album is drawn from personal experience. Explains the singer: “The idea for the song came from one of those days that we all have - where everyone blows up in your face, everything goes wrong. It feels like you’re up against the world. I had one of those days.”
Your Man
The title track from Josh's sophomore album (2006's ‘Your Man’) soared to the top of the country charts - and wowed the critics. For the singer it was a career game changer. Says Josh: “It’ll always be special for me because it’s my first No. 1. It helped me get to that next level.”
Time Is Love
The first single from ‘Punching Bag’ offers a different lyrical take on relationships. Explains Josh: “When I heard this particular song it had a lyric message that I hadn’t really been able to say yet. Instead of spending quality time with the one you love, spend quantity time with that person. The more time you spend with that person the more you’re going to get to know who they are.”
Why Don’t We Just Dance
'Why Don't We Just Dance' became Josh Turner’s longest stay at the top of the charts but was originally scheduled to be recorded by another artist. Which artist? Explains the normally-cagey singer: “There was a long time there where I couldn’t really say, but now it’s all said and done… it was Rascal Flatts. Probably would’ve [sounded] a lot different than the Josh Turner version!”
Long Black Train
Josh concludes his Walmart Soundcheck set with the self-penned title track from his 2003 debut, ‘Long Black Train.’ True story: ‘Long Black Train’ was actually inspired by a vision Josh had of a long black train. Sings Josh: “That train is a beauty, makin’ everybody stare / But its only destination is the middle of nowhere.”
