About The Artist

The Set List

Moved to Stone
Center Staging in Burbank, California was the scene for Soundcheck's exclusive set with sultry soul singer Joss Stone. We discovered an artist who has been performing for years, but one whose true spirit is just beginning to hit the mainstream.

Although her latest album is titled Introducing Joss Stone, the 20-year-old Brit has already recorded two other powerful albums. And she's sold more than 9 million records worldwide. Witnessing a performer ready to reveal her personal identity is an important turning point, and Joss proved she's got the goods. Look out America - Joss Stone is about to win your hearts.

On Real Soul
From the first note she sang to the last, we were floored. It's hard to believe that voice comes from that girl. Joss' throaty vocals bring to mind a woman twice her age, not a sun-streaked California surfer girl. How does she respond to such observations? "People ask that a lot: 'How can you be so soulful?' and 'How did you get like that?'" Joss says, cheerfully. "The answer is I truly don't know. And I think it's really a compliment that they say I'm a soulful singer... That wasn't something that I labeled myself with. I don't believe that the pieces of music should have a label. I just sing. I just make a noise. People happen to like it. Thank God!"

On Her Influences
Seeing Joss onstage is like watching a legend in the making. She brings to mind a young Dusty Springfield with the pipes of Aretha Franklin. So, who moves Miss Stone? "I've listened to music since my mom popped me out," the singer explains. "The first record that I owned that I really loved and listened to? I have two. Enya and Aretha Franklin's greatest hits."

On Introducing Joss Stone
Joss' third album shows the singer at an important crossroad. Collaborating with producer Raphael Saadiq turned out to be a very good decision, as Stone couldn't sound any happier. "This is my third album," she explains. "The other two albums I feel like... that was somebody else's vision. This time it's my vision. That's a first. So I found Raphael. He makes sure it sounds just like the record. I want it to be live. And real. That's the most important thing to me. When I'm in the studio, I try and bring the stage to the studio, not the other way around. I like to feel the audience. This (album) is me saying, 'I'm Joss. Nice to meet you.'"

The Closing
With outstanding record sales and a string of hits, Joss Stone's career has been an international whirlwind success. But how many of us know the real Joss? With the release of her new album, she reveals the woman behind the voice. In her new opus, Stone travels full circle: as a seasoned songwriter, sensational singer and a girl finally coming into her own. The record drops March 19, so go pick it up. Till next time.

- "Joss" was discovered at the age of 14, when she appeared on a BBC TV talent show, Star for a Night (an American Idol-like show), and belted out a winning rendition of Donna Summer's "On the Radio"

- Joss' first single, 'Fell in Love with a Boy,' was a reworking of The White Stripes' 2001 hit, 'Fell in Love with a Girl'

- Singer. Songwriter. Actress? That's right. Joss made her debut in the 2006 fantasy film, Eragon, where she plays a witch named Angela.

- Joss has been an ardent vegetarian since childhood
Girl They Won't Believe It
Soulful and poetic, Joss opens her set with a song from her new album, Introducing Joss Stone. "Girl, they won't believe it," Joss croons. "I finally found some sweet through the bitters of life." An anthem about droning out the negative voices, Stone claims this song as her own, singing a cautionary tale about a "stubborn girl" who "refuses to change. Truly a powerful song.

Music
Joss launches into another strong tune from her new release (the album version features a guest appearance from Lauryn Hill), evoking an old school Fugees sound. Watching Joss perform, you get a sense that this girl really loves music. Incidentally, this track may just be the world's first love song to music. "Nothing in this world got me like you do, baby," Stone croons. "I'm so in love with my music."

Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now
Previewing a hip-hop-style cut from Introducing Joss Stone, the pitch-perfect chanteuse delivers a delicious groove - but one without Common (who appears on the original album cut). It's really just a simple love song about finding the one who melts your heart. Joss teases with flirtatious lyrics, "Funny how my world keeps spinnin'. Sometimes you can be so silly."

Tell Me 'Bout It
The first single (and already a smash hit) from the new album showcases a younger, more playful side of Joss Stone. She references "stormy weather" in this song, but it's light years away from Lena Horne. "I need a little lovin' at least two times a day," Joss confesses. "So when I call you boy, you better run here right away."

Right to Be Wrong
"I've got a right to be wrong, I've been held down too long." So begins Joss in this track from the singer's sophomoric effort, Mind, Body & Soul. It's no coincidence she pulls this one out of the bag today: a song about using your past to push you forward. "Right to Be Wrong" is a standout Stone tune with revealing lyrics: "I've got to break free so I can finally breathe."

Jet Lag
Joss closes her set with another strong track from Mind, Body & Soul. A tale about overwhelming love, Joss sings a tale of romantic delusion from the heart. "I got jet lag and I never even left the ground," she warns. "See, it's like that every time you come around."
