About The Artist

The Set List

She’s freshly blonde, newly married, and she has an incredible new record out. 'Unbroken' signals a mature musical step for Katharine McPhee; the singer even traveled to Nashville to co-write tunes with some of America's most in-demand hitmakers. Katharine's Soundcheck set not only includes new tunes and a new look... she's also serving up an ultra-cool mash-up of George Michael's 'Faith.' Check out our interview and live performance with Katharine McPhee - and go pick up a copy of 'Unbroken' online and in Walmart stores nationwide!

-The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On Singing Vs. Acting:
“I’ve found that the worlds are very different. I’m passionate about both of them. At this point in my life... it’s the music. I don’t know how some people juggle. I’m a perfectionist. I would love to make sure that everything I’m doing is to the best of my ability. I don’t know if I could do two things at once!”

On Staying Unbroken:
“Not only have I been in this business now three or four years, I feel like I’m still unbroken. I feel like I’m still together. I felt really free and untamed on this record. My record company really gave me the opportunity to find the direction I wanted to go.”

On Songwriting Chemistry:
“It’s hard being sort of thrown into a room with people you don’t know... and just expected to click with them right away! Some times it definitely happens!”

On The School Of Hard Knocks:
“Don’t let anyone - even if it’s your mom and dad – tell you that you can’t do it. Have [the] courage to perservere. We all get knocked down here and there. The best thing you can do is find someone in your life who can help brush you off.”

It’s Not Right
A stunning Katharine McPhee launches into her opening tune, ‘It’s Not Right,’ a retro-sounding ballad about self-doubt and realization. Katharine’s dramatic new look mirrors the mature, more sophisticated themes at play on her new album. She sings: “Can I carry the weight of these secrets and doubts? I know they’re never spoken. But inside… they’re coming out.”

Had It All
Explains Katharine: “’Had It All’ is definitely a song about looking back and… reevaluating what you had, and not really knowing what you had. I totally connected to it. I can relate to it in so many different ways. It sort of had a fun vibe to it… even though it’s sort of depressing lyrically. I had it all, and now I’m down in the ditches!”

Over It
Katharine reaches back to 2007 with ‘Over It,’ the first single from her self-titled debut album. The song is a poppier affair than the cuts on ‘Unbroken,’ but Katharine’s voice transforms a simple ballad into a powerful statement of resilience. Sings Katharine: “I’m over your hands, and I’m over your mouth. Trying to drag me down… and fill me with self-doubt.”

Lifetime
One of the defining moments from Katharine’s new album is a smooth, jazzy affair entitled ‘Lifetime.’ Slow and melodic, the midtempo ballad seems tailor-made for Katharine’s silky vocals. She sings: “This could be the moment… that turns into a lifetime.”

Brand New Key / Faith
The album's only cover (‘Brand New Key’ was recorded by folk singer Melanie in 1971) is a funky foot-tapper about a roller skater! Although the song was first recorded almost 40 years ago, Katharine gives it a fresh update – and an ultra cool mash-up. (Yep, that’s George Michael’s ‘Faith.’)

Say Goodbye
“Did you even love me? Does it even matter? Did you even notice?” ‘Say Goodbye’ is a stirring tour-de-force, a track that forms the emotional centerpiece of Katharine’s new album. As she chronicles the dissolution of a major relationship, Katharine warns: “This way it won’t hurt so much… when we say goodbye.”

Keep Drivin’ (Bonus Song)
Raising her arms to the sky, Katharine concludes her Walmart set with an atmospheric tune co-written with Chris Tompkins and Rachael Yamagata. She sings: “It’s a long way home. And I feel undone. How I tried my best… not to run.”
