About The Artist
The Set List
“Some of the songs that I recorded on this record, I don’t know if they would have been as believable if they had been on previous records.” That’s an older, wiser Kenny Chesney discussing the themes at play on his brand new disc, ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey.' The new record reveals a more reflective side to the 'No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems' singer - and it's a side we like. On Hemingway:
“My favorite Hemingway novel was ‘The Old Man And The Sea’ because the two characters in that book -- the old man and the kid -- remind me so much of my relationship with my grandfather. When I heard ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey,’ it just reminded me of the life that he lived. It was full of everything; it was full of all kinds of emotions. He got through it with a lot of grace and style, but a little regret here and there. I think that’s a common denominator with everybody.”
On Getting Older:
“Every artist says that they think there’s a little bit of something for everybody on their record. That being said, I do believe that there is something for everybody on this record! The older you get, the more things you go through. Some of the songs that I recorded on this record, I don’t if know if they would have been as believable if they had been on previous records. I think that goes to where I am as a person; it goes to where I’m at in my life.”
On Grace Potter:
“My favorite song on this record is a song called 'You And Tequila.' It’s a song that I did with this girl named Grace Potter. I first heard her voice a couple of years ago and just fell in love with her singing. The fact that I’m singing with Grace is a big thrill.”
On What’s Next:
“I wanna be a better songwriter; I wanna be a better entertainer. You never stay the same. I want to try to get better no matter what it is. As a person; as an individual, as a songwriter.”
On His First Love:
“Everybody hits a creative wall every now and then. I hope I always feel the need to write a song. You can never get away from being a songwriter.”
On The Early Days:
“I was in college. I was sitting on a stool, had a tip jar in front of me. I was playing a place for free enchiladas and tips! That’s when I first started to realize that anybody was listening. All my buddies were broke, and I was sitting up there playing on a stool and making about twenty five bucks a night. But I was happy. That’s when I decided that I was pretty sure this was going to be my life. That’s when I knew.”
Did You Know?
• He grew up in the small East Tennessean town of Luttrell
• He began playing small bars. After graduating college in 1991, Kenny took his guitar to Nashville and performed at local restaurants and bars. He landed his first record contract in 1993.
• He's known for his successful national tours. Kenny's 'Sun City Carnival Tour' made $71.1 million in 2009, placing him sixth out of all touring acts.
• He has sold more than 30 million albums.
• He has had nine consecutive releases debut atop Billboard's Country Album Chart, five of which have also debuted at Number 1 on Billboard's All Genre Top 200 Album Chart.
• He has nineteen # 1 singles, nine # 2 singles and an incredible thirty-one Top 5 singles.
• His new album reflects an older, wiser Kenny Chesney. Explains the artist: “I’d like to think that we’ve all come to realize that life is a little more complicated than maybe we thought. It’s still fun. It’s still intense. It’s still about friends and dreams and all kinds of things, but there’s something more, too.”
Somewhere With You
Kenny opens his set with a pivotal track from his new album, ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey.’ The affecting ballad finds the singer out of sorts with his newfound freedom. Sings Kenny: “I can go out any night of the week / But it’s just a temporary high / Because when I close my eyes / I’m somewhere with you.”
The Boys Of Fall
Explains Kenny: “’The Boys Of Fall’ perfectly describes my life and how I grew up in East Tennessee. I only played two years of high school football but I didn’t know at the time the impact that those two years were going to have on the rest of my life. Football teaches so many lessons to people that I don’t know you learn other places.”
Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven
Co-written by Marty Dodson and Jim Collins, ‘Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven’ (from his 2008 album ‘Lucky Old Sun’) is not only a fan favorite, but one of Kenny's many number one hits. Wearing his signature cowboy hat, Kenny croons: “Everybody wants to go to heaven / but nobody wants to go now.”
Coastal
The songs of Kenny Chesney have always been about celebration and respite from blue collar woes. This new song from ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey’ is sure to please those many Margaritaville fans. Sings the East Tennessee native: “No more building transmissions / He’s going deep sea fishing / Hey, you gotta watch that man / He’ll go coastal on you!”
Never Wanted Nothing More
Kenny closes his set with a fan favorite, the first single from his 2007 album, ‘Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates.’ The song’s reflective state of mind echoes the mature sentiments of ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey.’ Sings Kenny: "I never wanted nothing more / I am what I am / I'm what I'm not / I'm sure happy with what I got."
