THE ARRIVAL:
Keyshia & The Band
Keyshia Cole - Lead singer, writer and emerging soul superstar
Bryan Abreu - Keyboards
Steve Wyerman - Guitar
Tim Williams - Bass
Thomas Pridgen - Drums
It's Capitol Time
Keyshia popped into the control room at the famous Capitol Studios and surprised us all. She came in fired up and ready to go, putting us in the perfect mood for some serious soulful singing.
"Get It Goin!"
As Keyshia and her band checked out the Wal-Mart Soundcheck scene, you could sense she just couldn't wait to get behind the mic and sing. A passionate performer, Keyshia digs deep into her music and sings from her heart.
She Has "It"
Just talking with her for mere moments, you could see that this "It" girl has an aura of success that hovers around her. She exudes self-confidence, and truly believes it was meant to be.
The Stage Is Set
With the crew having just finished setting up, it was time for Keyshia and her band to take the stage. We looked forward to hearing songs from her platinum-selling album "The Way It Is" ... and so will you.
THE SET:
I Changed My Mind
Keyshia opened with her hit single "I Changed My Mind," combining her sensational soul style and strong stage presence to tell the story of how she doesn't let anything get in the way of fulfilling her dreams.
The Soundcheck crew was dialed in, and why not? We now understand why she's being compared to a young Mary J. Blige ...the girl's got soul.
I Just Want It to Be Over / Love
On "I Just Want It to Be Over," Keyshia's soulful, powerful vocals transitioned beautifully into the highlight of the set, the feel-good, old-school-styled ballad "Love" - a straight-ahead plea to the object of her affection, who's involved with someone else. "I love this song," she said, "but it hurts, too, because I wrote it, so I feel it every time I sing it."
THE INTERVIEW:
From Rags to Riches
Being raised in a tough "ghetto" neighborhood in Oakland, California only intensified Keyshia's drive to succeed in music. "As a child, I would lie in my bed, and wonder and dream about the music world and all the amazing people," she said.
L.A.-Bound
After breaking up with a boyfriend, she bolted for L.A., where she was quickly discovered and signed by Ron Fair at Geffen Records. "Some things in life I feel are just destined, and music is one of those things to me," said Keyshia. "I really believe I was destined to do this in life."
And you know what? After listening to this performance, so do we.
THE POST-SCRIPT:
A Closer Connection
What a day! We got to hear a powerful performance from a sure-fire up-and-coming star, and got an inside look into Keyshia Cole's rise to stardom. Not too shabby if you ask us. And if you liked her performance here, you're sure to love her entire album, "The Way It Is."
This is what Wal-Mart Soundcheck is all about: giving you, the audience, a chance to connect closer with artists you love. Enjoy the show.
