On His Major Label Debut:
“The label has been totally awesome. I was able to do what I wanted to do. I think that the people at the label knew that I knew who I was as an artist. It wasn’t like I needed to find my sound or find myself. I knew exactly what it is that I wanted to do. I wasn’t trying to figure this out or that out. It was just me being me!”
On Life After Idol:
“It’s a weird place to be. You come out of Idol and you’re part of this club. There’s only nine of us. Once the show’s over, that’s when you can make a name for yourself. I’ve been able to do that. It’s important for me that people know that I just love music. I don’t know what I’d be doing without it; it consumes me in every way.”
On Secret Guitar Playing:
“When I first started playing guitar and singing, it was something that I didn’t want people to know. It was for me. I was never trying to be like the coolest guy in the class with the guitar and picking up girls. I just liked it and I did it on my own.”
On Taking Risks:
“You really have to take risks. That’s my number one advice to anybody that wants to make music their life. If you don’t take any risks, you really will never know. I gave up everything. I gave up my house, relationships, jobs, everything. Don’t let what other people say get to you."

Live It Up
How does Lee describe the title track to his new album? “It’s just a great motto to go by. Live it up. Have a good time! That’s kinda how I felt about the whole album. I just decided that would be a good title.”
Sweet Serendipity
“It’s really about running into luck kinda by chance. It’s very me. I’m a very simple person. Whatever’s gonna happen is gonna happen. You can only control so much. The whole song’s about how you can’t control life - you have to just live it. That’s really what I do.”
Earth Stood Still
One of the most romantic tracks from ‘Live It Up,’ is a standout ballad written about the memory of a perfect date. With his trademark Midwestern charm and powerful voice, Lee turns out a set highlight: “It was a perfect day / The day the earth stood still.”
Dear Isabelle
“There is an Isabelle! It’s about somebody in my life. All my songs are about experiences and things that I’ve been through. Love and relationships and fate and things like that are a big part of life. I tend to write about it. The song’s just about how you had somebody and you lost them…”
Beautiful Like You
Lee closes his Soundcheck set with the affecting ballad, ‘Beautiful Like You.’ The opening lines of the track reveal the singer’s sensitive side. Sings Lee: “Everybody wants to look into the mirror and feel a little better now / Everyone wants to know there’s someone out there…”
