The Set List
“I don’t think these songs are ever going to go out of style. Timeless lyrics and timeless music can never go wrong.” That’s Canadian newcomer Melanie Fiona sounding off to Soundcheck about her stylish debut, ‘The Bridge.' The Motown-inspired record is a throwback to old school pop soul, and the Toronto-based singer/songwriter has already earned a Grammy shout-out for the single, ‘It Kills Me,' and an opening tour slot for Alicia Keys. Check out our candid interview and performance with Melanie - and go pick up a copy of ‘The Bridge’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide.

On The Bridge:
“The symbol of a bridge is something that’s really strong. Literally what it’s used for is getting from one side to the next, bridging the gap between cities and people and places. That’s how I felt about my music. I wanted this album to be a body of work that would bridge people together.”
On Timeless Music:
“I grew up listening to a lot of soul music and a lot of different genres of music. I never really settled on just being inspired or enjoying one style; I just always appreciated a good record for being a good record!”
On The Songwriting Process:
“It never feels like work. We have a great time. One of the best techniques for songwriting that I’ve learned from [co-writer Andrea Martin] is just not thinking, and then making sense of it afterwards. You can stop yourself if you try to over-think. Let the voice go and just have fun!"
On Her Favorite Music:
“I’m torn between my culture and my upbringing. I would say that I really enjoy soul music a lot from the ‘50s and the ‘60s, that very retro sound. I just love the beauty of the songwriting, the simplicity of the songs. The stories were just great. It was raw talent back then. Whenever I want to sing and feel good, I always go back to my old soul records.”
On Grammy:
“It’s an overwhelming, unimaginable moment. I’ve never experienced such a rush of emotion that brought me to tears like that. Happy tears!”

Bang Bang
Opening with a ‘Bang Bang,’ Melanie Fiona launches into a set that sounds straight outta Motown. ‘Bang Bang' is an inspired twist on old school soul, a playful pop song about fighting hard for the one you love. Teases the singer: “I been lockin’ and loadin’ / I been shootin’ forever / I got my eye on the target…”
Give It To Me Right
The debut single from ‘The Bridge’ is an attitude adjustment written by accomplished musician Andrea Martin, who also wrote Leona Lewis’s smash hit single, ‘Better In Time.’ 'Give It To Me Right' is a similar female empowerment anthem, a take-no-prisoners tune about never settling for second best. Sings Melanie: “I'm not trying to run your life / That’s why I’m nobody’s wife…”
Monday Morning
Things get decidedly slower with ‘Monday Morning,’ a slow-boiling ballad from Melanie’s debut record, ‘The Bridge.’ Midway through ‘Monday Morning,' the tune turns uptempo and urgent. Cautions Melanie: “This is a warning / That I’m leaving on Monday Morning…”
It Kills Me
'It Kills Me' earned Melanie a prestigious Grammy nomination. Explains the artist: “It makes me feel great that out of something so tragic, the pain and love and all the pain that I put into that song, turned into something really successful and beautiful for me. One of the highlights of my career for sure!”
Ay Yo
"'Ay Yo' is a special song for me. I wrote it at a time when I was very frustrated about where I was at in my career. I just feel like ‘Ay Yo’ is that anthem record that I want to help motivate people, like it did for me. It’s probably my favorite on the album!”
