The Set List
If you crossed the face of an angel with the heart of a lion, you'd arrive somewhere close to the essence of what is Miranda Lambert: part rock star, part down-home country, all talent. Lounging pre-session in our LA studio, it was impossible to ignore that intangible quality you often hear music industry veterans refer to as the "it" factor. "It" is what makes a star and Miranda definitely has "it." As the day progressed, it was obvious to everyone present just what that means.
Miranda and her band had driven through the night from a show in Las Vegas the night before. Still full of the previous evening's excitement, she opened with "New Strings," an up-tempo country two-step that showcased Miranda singing the praises of the open road. Two heartfelt ballads followed, "Bring Me Down" and "Love Is Looking for You," but the energy really peaked when she launched into "Me and Charlie Talking," a vivid country epic. Miranda closed the session with an emotionally charged performance of her hit single "Kerosene," the gripping story of a lover crossed. "What a set!" a crew member yelled out after the final note. We couldn't have agreed more.
After the set, Miranda sat down with Soundcheck's own Jenni Readio for an interview that shed some light on the thought process of this budding superstar. It's easy to assume that, because Miranda looks so polished today, she's always been this way. The reality is she's been working for years to get to this point: "I've always had to work so hard for everything and music was the one thing that I was really good at, and I stuck with it." Miranda also stressed how important family is to her both personally and professionally. "My dad is on the road with us," she said. "My brother runs the Web site and my mom is the fan club president ... my family gave up everything to make this dream a reality, and now it's all paying off."
We witnessed today a complete team just beginning to hit its stride. The family, the band and the people around her all allow Miranda to channel her talent and energy to create a performance that leaves you feeling just right. She's definitely got "it" and we're glad "it" is being used the right way.
We'll be hearing lots more in the future from this budding country star, but for now, as the saying goes, "that's all she wrote!" Enjoy the show - we'll catch you back here real soon.
