About The Artist

The Set List

Love never goes out of style. As long as people are falling in love, falling out of love… there will always be a song for me to write.

R&B superstar NE-YO talks to Walmart Soundcheck about his new album 'R.E.D.', an acronym that stands for Realizing Every Dream. There aren't many dreams the Arkansas-born artist hasn't realized: he's a three-time Grammy award winner; he's written hits for superstars like Beyoncé and Rihanna, and he's a proud new dad. Filmed at The Lavo in New York City, Walmart Soundcheck presents an exclusive live set and interview with NE-YO. Check it out here -- and go pick up a copy of ‘R.E.D.’ online and in Walmart stores nationwide!

-The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On His New Album:
"It's an acronym standing for Realizing Every Dream. I called the album that because that's where I'm at in my life right now - I'm realizing every dream. I decided at age nine that music was gonna be my life. Every dream and aspiration that I set for myself from nine to now -- pretty much every single one of them -- have all been realized, and all through the power of music. This album is a celebration of that fact.”

On His New Role At Motown:
“I’m excited about the position because it allows me to help out the hundreds of thousands that I come across every single day. It’s definitely a learning experience. The language of an executive and the language of an artist are not always the same language.”

On Inspiration:
“My inspiration for songwriting comes from just everyday life. I experience something or somebody new every day. I come across a person I’ve never spoken to before; I do something I’ve never done before every single day.”

On R&B And Pop:
“I paid attention to the fact that I have two very dominant fan bases. I have my die-hard R&B fans here; I have my die-hard dance and/or pop fans here. Then we have the people that rest in between those two points. With this album I needed to make sure that everybody who calls themselves a NE-YO fan has something to latch on to.”

Did You Know?

• He’s a multi-talented artist. Three-time Grammy Award winner NE-YO (real name Shaffer Chimere Smith) is a singer/songwriter, record producer, actor, dancer, and record executive.

• He’s written songs for some of the world’s most prolific artists. Before the Arkansas-born singer released his 2006 debut, he penned tunes for music’s biggest stars, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Faith Hill, and more.

• He’s a music industry executive. NE-YO was recently appointed to Senior Vice President of A&R for the legendary Motown Records label. Says the singer: “It’s definitely a learning experience. The language of an executive and the language of an artist are not always the same language.”

• His new album is called 'R.E.D.' NE-YO’s fifth studio album stands for Realizing Every Dream. Explains the artist: “I called the album that because that's where I'm at in my life right now - I'm realizing every dream.”

Lazy Love
“This journey doesn’t start at the beginning,” announces NE-YO before launching in to the lead-off single from ‘R.E.D.’ ‘Lazy Love’ finds NE-YO making a powerful return to his R&B roots; it’s a slow-boiling jam about the singer’s romantic side.

Jealous
One of the standout tunes on ‘R.E.D.’ finds NE-YO delivering a different take on jealousy: “Ladies out there: if you have a man that’s jealous of the sun that touches your skin on a Sunday afternoon, two things about this man are true. One: he might be a little crazy. Two: you’re doing something right.”

Don't Make Em Like You
Armed with an infectious “clap-your-hands” chorus, ‘Don’t Make ‘Em Like You’ gives a shout out to “the ladies with class.” Though the original version features a guest rap from hip hop star Wiz Khalifa, NE-YO goes it solo for Soundcheck. Sings the Arkansas-born star: “I love the way you are / ‘cause they don’t make ‘em like you anymore.”

Unconditional
Set to a thumping beat, ‘Unconditional’ is one of the tracks on ‘R.E.D.’ that takes you straight to the dance floor. Explains NE-YO: “The pop and the dance music that I did for this album - I needed it to have a little bit more depth and meaning than your typical pop music.”

Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)
“’Let Me Love You’ is about the importance of loving yourself. I feel like that’s something that’s lacking nowadays, especially in regard to our women. The song is actually about being brave enough to let a person get close enough to you to teach you the importance of loving yourself. It’s not something that I feel you can learn on your own. It’s something that you have to be taught.”
