About The Artist

The Set List

They say you have your whole life to write your first album. It’s 2012, and ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ feels like my debut again.

Live from Los Angeles: Walmart Soundcheck welcomes Canadian powerhouse Nelly Furtado and her ‘Spirit Indestructible.’ The 'Big Hoops' singer is back with her fifth studio record, an effort featuring collaborations from Nas, The Kenyan Boys Choir, Portuguese singer Sara Tavares, and rapper Ace Primo. -The Crew at Walmart Soundcheck

On The Spirit Indestructible:
“I describe it as a friendly punch in the face. It’s not violent but it’s aggressive; it has a rawness and an immediacy to it. It’s also friendly because the themes are quite positive, quite spiritual and very uplifting.”

On Making Music:
“I feel like the songs aren’t even mine. I really make music for people to enjoy. That’s why I make music.”

On Success:
"I think the secret to balance in life is having positive people around you. You need to surround yourself with positive people with great energy, and you need to be able to determine what kind of energy drags you down and what doesn’t."

On Family:
“My family’s been amazing. They’ve managed to really keep me grounded because they’re so real. I come from a very working class background, very simple roots. That really helps me.”

On Her Voice:
“I see myself as a vocal instrumentalist so my instrument is my voice. And the different genres I explore are like playgrounds for my voice.”

• Her new album is called ‘The Spirit Indestructible.’ Explains Nelly: “They say you have your whole life to write your first album. For me that would have been ‘Whoa, Nelly!’, which came out in 2000. I feel like I’ve lived a whole other lifetime since then. It’s 2012, and ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ feels like my debut again, in a way.”

• ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ features some talented friends. Producers on Nelly's fifth studio album include Darkchild, Tiesto, Salaam Remi, and more. Other notable collaborations include: The Kenyan Boys Choir, rapper Nas, Portuguese singer Sara Tavares, up-and-coming rapper Ace Primo, and more!

Maneater
Dressed in a red dress and sporting oversized hoop earrings, Nelly Furtado arrives ready for Soundcheck. First up? A re-working of the singer's 2006 hit: 'Maneater.' Interesting fact: Nelly has said that she drew inspiration for 'Maneater' from Hall & Oates’ 1982 hit of the same name.

Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)
Nelly describes the first single from ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ as a song about her “swagger-in-spades, rhyme-writing 14 year-old self.” Produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, ‘Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)’ finds the singer looking back: “I’m going down / I got my big hoops on / Pant leg so wide / I’ve got my backpack on.”

Spirit Indestructible
“It’s a really important song on the album. It’s one of my favorites. This idea that we are all indestructible, whether you’re talking about today’s times or [in] history... times when humans have overcome.”

Turn Off The Light
Next up: Nelly’s infectious 2001 hit gets an inspired makeover. ‘Turn Off The Light (from the singer’s Grammy-winning debut ‘Whoa, Nelly!') is a song about confronting your loneliness when the lights go out. Sings Nelly: “Follow me ‘til you see all my dreams / Not everything in this magical world is quite what it seems.”

Be OK
It’s time for an album highlight from ‘The Spirit Indestructible,’ one that teams Nelly up with fellow Canadian singer/songwriter, Dylan Murray. Written about a relationship gone wrong ("You were always there but I never cared"), Nelly describes ‘Be OK’ as “a charming, simple duet.”

Parking Lot
Closing with a new cut from ‘The Spirit Indestructible,’ Nelly takes us to the ‘Parking Lot’ – and the dance floor. Brimming with attitude and fresh beats, 'Parking Lot' finds the singer taking the party to the street: “Meet us in the parking lot / We’re gonna turn the speakers up / Cuz we ain’t doin’ nothin’ lately!"
