THE ARRIVAL
Country Music Goes Hollywood
The Soundcheck crew traveled to West Hollywood's Westlake Audio Studios for a chance to record with one of the hottest bands in country music. Country may have its share of divas, but Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush definitely don't fit that profile. Their down-to-earth energy, infectious charisma and southern charm are evident the second they enter the studio. Sorry to break the news, but Sugarland are as sweet as pie.
THE SET
Settlin'
Rocking her signature Georgia twang, Jennifer growls this powerful anthem from the bottom of her soul. 'Settlin'' is an inspiring song about not selling out. We're already sold.
Want To
"We could just be friends ... or we could jump in," sings Jennifer on this sultry new single from their new album Enjoy the Ride. It's a song about not holding back, and Jennifer and Kristian don't. With Kristian's rocking guitar chords and a powerful chorus, we can see why this song is already a smash hit.
Everyday America
A tender tribute to small-town America and living a "great big life," 'Everyday America' strikes an obvious personal chord with the band. Sugarland hail from the heartland and this song sings it out loud and proud.
County Line
This is one of Jennifer's favorite songs on the new album. Evoking old-school Reba (one of her heroes), Jennifer sings beautifully of a love without borders. She even breaks out the tambourine!
THE INTERVIEW
On the New Album:
Teaming up with talented music producer Byron Gallimore, Sugarland's sophomore album not only delivers the band's signature sound, but takes them to a rockier, more ambitious place. How does the band feel about crossing over into new ground? Explains Jennifer: "I feel like our fans are such that they want to evolve with us. It's an evolution. You don't want to regurgitate the same thing, you wanna grow a bit without making a complete departure. And I think this record is that."
Sugarland on Songwriting:
Watching Kristian and Jennifer perform together on stage, we're struck by the personality of their songs. With their signature matter-of-fact style, Sugarland sings from experience - and it shows. What's their sweet recipe? Says Jennifer: "We take a lot of pride working very hard at our songwriting. We get the opportunity to try and write all of our songs. We get to connect to them in such a deep level that it really works and carries over into our performance."
POST-SCRIPT:
Enjoying the Ride
Today, we witnessed two true country music stars. With their easygoing chemistry and powerful on-stage presence, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush are headed for big places. We sure enjoyed the ride ... we hope you do, too. See ya next time.
